BUTADIENE STORAGE FACILITY GETS GO AHEAD11 October 2005EPA received an application for a butadiene storage facility at Corio in December 2004 and after a thorough assessment issued a works approval with conditions in May 2005.
The works approval application was assessed against the stringent air quality requirements set out in the State Environment Protection Policy (Air quality management).
EPA has placed strict conditions in the works approval to ensure the proposed butadiene storage facility will fully comply with State Environment Protection Policies.
The policy requires that butadiene emissions be minimised to the maximum extent achievable.
The storage of butadiene by Terminals Pty Ltd, which is allowable under the local council planning scheme, has recently been approved by VCAT after a 15-day hearing where the community and local council opposition submissions wereheard.
EPA has undertaken monitoring of butadiene as part of the air quality monitoring project in Corio and extremely low levels have been detected. Further monitoring will be undertaken.
EPA will regulate the proposed butadiene facility to ensure all works approval and licence conditions are complied with.
