EPA GRANTS WORKS APPROVAL FOR EASTERN TREATMENT PLANT

20 January 2010

EPA Victoria today issued a Works Approval to Melbourne Water for an advanced tertiary treatment upgrade of the Eastern Treatment Plant in Bangholme.

EPA acting chief executive officer Terry A’Hearn said the Authority was satisfied that the proposed works met the requirements of the Environment Protection Act (1970) and is consistent with the State environment protection policies.

“The Works Approval process has been robust and consultative and will deliver the best result for the environment and the community,” he said.

“EPA is satisfied that the current Melbourne Water proposal for the advanced treatment plant will improve upon their previous application, which was granted in 2002, and will lead to a better environmental outcome.”

Mr A’Hearn said EPA’s decision was based on a thorough review of Melbourne Water’s proposal by independent experts and extensive consultation with the community.

“There will be a significant improvement in the quality of the discharge as a result of the upgrade. This will mean improved conditions for the marine environment around the outfall and adjacent beaches,” he said.

The upgrade is due to be complete by the end of 2012.
